Francesca Longhini.

I define my works as abstract genre scenes.

9 Questions to Francesca Longhini.

Italian artist, living and working in Brescia, Italy.

What is your art about?

I define my works as abstract genre scenes. The white works show the “Hic et nunc” feelings, and the black works flood in the time. Although both ones are silent and deaf. I feel close to Agnes Martin because of the sensitivity shining through her quiet and controlled paintings. Moreover, I feel a sort of connection with Jenny Holzer when I choose the titles of my works, because words have a strong meaning for me, as for her.

Please tell us more about your working process, routine, your studio set up and the way you approach new artworks.

I am a creature of habit. I reach my studio every morning after I come back from the print factory where I work. Sometimes I continue a work started the previous day, sometimes I jump into a new project. I want to be present there to enable things to happen. My working routine has two faces: a technical one and a creative one. I make the frames of my works on my own and I also prepare the linen canvas with an Italian traditional process; I use rabbit glue and gesso di Bologna. It’s the artisanal part of the work. After that comes the creative part: I sketch my projects on a block notes and think about the titles.

What is fertiliser for your work?

The more I know, the better is for my work. Curiosity is the best fertiliser.

Who or what has recently impressed you?

Cappella Palatina and all the Norman art in Sicily. Also the movie “The last supper” by Stacy Title, impressed me. A good black comedy.

Have a beer with an artist of your choice? Whom?

I would like to have a beer with Mark Rothko.

What’s your favourite city and why?

Actually I don’t have a favourite  city, I only have favourite people.

What’s your favourite restaurant and why?

I love to discover traditional, old fashioned, grotesque taverns.

What would you do with five euro found in the streets?

I would offer to Mark Rothko the beer.

Do you have any dream projects in mind that you would like to do in the future?

Yes, my dream is to improve myself and my work day by day.
