9 Questions to Lorenzo De Angelis.

Italian artist, living and working in Viterbo, Italy.

What is your art about?

My research focuses on building a structured image based on minimal elements of painting language and on sign, surface, full and voids relationships. The structure allows me to enclose each sign with others, so all of them are functional to generate a spatial dynamic that is different for rhythm, pulsation, thickness, and lightness in each image. In my work gesture is conceptualized by exploiting the peculiarities of other media such as print and digital, placing myself at the limit between autoriality and reproducibility. Finally it‘s a syntactic question: the medium is the message.

Please tell us more about your working process, routine, your studio set up and the way you approach new artworks.

I can’t speak of routine in the strict sense. Every day I’m in the studio, but not always to paint. Sometimes it’s just important to be there, observe and think. Generally I lay down the days when I prepare the supports, and others where I work on the images.

What is fertiliser for your work?

Art is done with art. It’s thoughts and ideas. Sometimes I’m influenced by books, such as “Species of spaces and other pieces” by Georges Perec is a book I came across several times because I find empathy with my research. Sometimes I have this feeling with films, but I can not explain what nature it is. Lately listening to much jazz while I work, somehow affects. Of course the history of art too, if anyone has done something right, you have to understand it.

Who or what has recently impressed you?

Some characters from Cormac McCarthy’s books, out of time and history, hopeless, savages and vitals.

Have a beer with an artist of your choice? Whom?

Simon Hantaï.

What’s your favourite city and why?

Maybe Venice, there is something that exists only in that place, it’s magical.

What’s your favourite restaurant and why?

I’d like to have money to eat in the restaurants more often. However I prefer Italian traditional cuisine, pizza and sometimes Japanese street food. I tried sushi but I have to test it again to understand how much I like it.

What would you do with five euro found in the streets?

A glass of white wine.

Do you have any dream projects in mind that you would like to do in the future?

Cuba.
